Tavernelli, born in Monza on 16 March 1991, took his first steps in the Lissone youth academy before moving to Desio where he completed his youth career. He had his first senior experience in 2009/10 wearing the shirt of Sangiorgese, a team playing in Serie C. At the end of the season the Lombard team won promotion to B Amateurs: Riccardo also played in the 2010/11 season with the same shirt. In the following two years he played in Latina, in National Division A, before moving to Legnano, in National Division B, in 2013/14.

In Lombardy he scored 11.2 points on average, with 4.9 rebounds, and was among the protagonists of the team's promotion to A2 Silver, which came following the victory in the promotion play-off of the Final Four played in Cervia against Latina on 22 June 2014. In 2014/15 he moved to Omegna, a team playing in A2 Silver, before returning to Latina in 2015/16, the year in which he averaged 12.9 points and added 4.2 rebounds.

Riccardo then moved to Trapani for the 2016/17 season, qualifying for the playoffs, which ended with elimination in the Round of 3 at the hands of Treviso (which won 0-2017 in the series). In the summer of 2018 he returned to Latina for the third time in his career, where he remained for the next two years. In the 19/3 season he was among the protagonists of the brilliant year experienced by the Lazio team, which achieved qualification for the Final Eight of the Italian Cup - where it was defeated by Treviso in the quarter-finals - and for the promotion playoffs, which concluded with elimination in the Round of 2 at the hands of Montegranaro, who prevailed XNUMX-XNUMX in the series.
