Born in Desio (MB) on 15 April 1982, Formenti began his career in the historic Aurora Desio, a club with which he carried out his entire youth sector career. With the same Club he also made his first team debut and contributed to reaching Serie C1 in the 2000/01 season.

In 2001/02 he moved to Treviglio, a team playing in B1, before moving to Junior Casale Monferrato, a club where he remained from 2002 to 2009. In 2004/05 he achieved the Cup-Championship double with the Piedmontese team: the 24th March 2005, on the PalaFerraris parquet, he won the Serie B Italian Cup following the 79-67 victory against Lumezzane. After finishing the regular season in first place, the team coached by Franco Ciani achieved their first historic promotion to Legadue thanks to a 3-2 victory in the final series against Forlì. He made his debut in the category on 2 October 2005 in the 79-86 defeat against Jesi, scoring 10 points in 22 minutes of play.

In 2009 he moved to Cremona and made his debut in Serie A on 18 October 2009, scoring 12 points in the match lost (103-104) against Pallacanestro Cantù: with the Lombard team he achieved salvation in both seasons. In 2011/12 he was in Brindisi, in Legadue: with the team coached by Piero Bucchi he first won the Italian Cup in his category and then achieved promotion to Serie A at the end of the playoff final won 3-1 against Pistoia.

He remained in Puglia for the following two years, before moving to Sassari where he was among the protagonists of the historic 2014/15 season of the team coached by Romeo Sacchetti, capable of winning the Italian Super Cup, the Italian Cup and the Scudetto at the end of the series final won 4-3 against Reggio Emilia.
