VOGHERA. Trieste conquers PalaOltrepo and beats Derthona 75-53. The Giulians built the lead in the first quarter, but it was in the second period (22-10) that they laid the foundations to win the first match of the series. Coach Demis Cavina changes the quintet compared to the last match by choosing Cosey, Greene, Sanna, Ricci and Cucci. Dalmasson starts with Prandin, Cavaliero, Parks, Green and Da Ros. After Green's initial bomb, Derthona scores with Cosey, stop and a shot, and Ricci's shot which climbs the rim from long range and enters. Halfway through the first quarter, Alma is ahead by one possession resulting from Green's second bomb. Both Trieste and Orsi defended strongly and the score was low, a consequence of the difficulty in finding good spacing. Alma tries to escape, but Cosey and Garri bring the match back to a draw. Seven consecutive points from Cavaliero, a place from Da Ros and the guests find the break (8-0) at the end of the quarter: the first period ends 24-16 and Derthona closes with 0/7 from three.

The second period begins and Tortona takes a six-point run (Cavaliero from long range and Green) and the deficit rises to 14 points (29-16). Dalmasson takes the bench and brings on Pecile, Simioni and Baldasso, while Cittadini and Coronica do not set foot on the pitch in the first 20'. Three consecutive free throws from Mascherpa, the only points in the first five minutes, bring Tortona back to -10 who have not yet scored a field goal. Baldasso and Simioni immediately get into rhythm from long range (Alma shoots at 50%), Trieste escapes at +19 with one minute left in the first half (42-23). It ends 46-26 for the guests with the arrest of Cavaliero (12 points in one half) and Sanna who doesn't close the transition.

Cavina chooses the same quintet at the beginning of the quarter, Greene scores two consecutive bombs that explode PalaOltrepo (46-32). Trieste's reaction comes immediately with Da Ros and Green and Alma's lead returns to 20 points (54-34). Tortona tries again, but Trieste is tough in defense and long in rotations. Bossi scores a three-pointer and the quarter ends with Tortona trailing by 19 points (61-42). In the final period the Lions tried until the end, but the disadvantage was too large. Trieste manages and remains ahead by 20 points until three minutes from the end. When the score is 71-47 for the guests Cavina time-out: game 1 ends 75-53.

Demis Cavina: The key to this match lies in unplayed basketball and that counts a lot in the playoffs: depth, experience, coldness and quality of play. These reasons had a great influence. If a team has eleven real players it can present itself better after the first series. We are the same as the last match against Mantova, except for Alviti who wasn't there and we have to thank Ricci for how he plays and how much he plays. Now we must try to change something in terms of details, being clear in understanding that we can face Trieste even with a defense that is more at the limit. The desire to make up for the boys in game 2 will be maximum.

Eugenio Dalmasson: The positive indication was the continuity and performance in defence. The playoffs are games to be experienced one at a time, Tortona will try to react with its qualities and I imagine them closer to the third quarter than to the start of the match. We were able to resist even though we took an 8-0 lead.
