Gabriele Spizzichini: “Derthona, a very ambitious project. There is great passion in the city"
One of the first players to arrive in Tortona in the summer was Gabriele Spizzichini, a point guard who played last season in Scafati. From the training camp in Salice d'Ulzio, the class of '92 explained how easy it was for him to choose to accept Bertram Derthona's offer, because ˝I knew that the project is very ambitious. The players who had already decided to be part of the team when I received the proposal also had a great influence on my decision.˝.
In Tortona Spizzichini also met Klaudio Ndoja, with whom he shared the emotions and successes of Virtus Bologna's triumphant 2016/17 season, which ended with the return to Serie A of the team then coached by Ramaglia. Precisely the bond with the winger was important in the point guard's decision, which he says he has ˝spoke at length with Ndoja this summer: turning down a project like that was difficult, plus having the chance to play with Klaudio again, with whom I shared the fantastic experience of Bologna, greatly influenced my decision to come and play in Tortona˝.
The player has a great knowledge of the A2 championship: in addition to having achieved promotion - at the end of the playoffs - with Virtus, he has also won the Italian Cup twice. The first in 2015/16 with Scafati's shirt, the second the following year in Bologna. The increased number of promotions and relegations has raised the level of difficulty of the championship, because ˝there are many teams in both the East Group and the West Group – says Spizzichini – which have strengthened compared to last year: our goal is to aim for the best possible result, but it is clear that it will not be easy given the strong competition˝.
In his first days in Tortona, before moving to Salice d'Ulzio, Spizzichini was also able to experience the affection and passion that can be felt for the team in the city: for the playmaker, the roster set up in the summer is ˝a good group of players who have a lot of desire to do, this is a good starting point. It's very comfortable in Tortona, the city is welcoming and the people make their warmth felt around us˝.
