Other solidarity initiatives by Derthona Basket
In the 2021/22 season, as part of 'Let's plant the future', Derthona Basket created notebooks in recycled paper which were donated, at Christmas, to primary school children in local schools.
The choice fell on these boys and girls because, just as the Club was involved in the first Serie A championship in its history, they too were involved in a new and stimulating scholastic adventure.
Delivered by the first team players, inside the notebooks there are games, crosswords and a photo of Leo, the official mascot.
On the occasion of Christmas 2021, some schools in the area promoted the collection of food and basic necessities intended for people in difficulty. Derthona Basket joined the initiative by participating in the final delivery to the Diocesan Caritas and the Mercy Solidarity Emporium of what was collected through the initiative.
In January 2022, a delegation of players and managers from the first team donated personalized DB aprons to the volunteers of the 'Carlo Boggio Sola' Solidarity Canteen in Tortona. The Solidarity Canteen is an initiative born from the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona, the Municipality and the Diocesan Caritas, which manages the canteen (which offers around 40 meals a day) together with the Agape Cooperative.
Inside the project 'Let's plant the future', another important initiative that unites Derthona Basket with local schools takes place on 6 April, on the occasion of the 'International Day of Sport for Development and Peace'. In the last two years, the Club - together with the schools - has conceived and created two significant events: a flashmob, broadcast live on Derthona TV, the official channel of the Society, which involved numerous institutes of all levels, and a event which took place simultaneously in the main squares of Tortona, Castelnuovo and Voghera.
The thousands of boys and girls involved in both occasions stood out for the creation of projects designed specifically for the day and presented on the natural stages set up for the realization of the events.
'Put sustainability at the CENTRE' is an event, organized by Derthona Basket and Danilo Boni, co-founder of Switch On Lab and Sustainable Events Advisor, which involved local schools.
With the participation of Alex Bellini, an explorer specializing in extreme feats, the conference - which falls within the scope of PiantiAMO il futuro - took place on 10 May 2022 at the Teatro Civico of Tortona. In the two moments of discussion, one aimed at students, one at the authorities and citizens, there were numerous speakers who brought their own contribution to the topic of sustainability. For the children, May 10th was also the opportunity to participate in a series of creative workshops, starting from recycled material, managed by Gestion Ambiente and Cooperativa Agape.
'When a new journey begins. A life beyond multiple sclerosis' is the title of the book written by Professor Filippo Martinelli Boneschi, member of the Neurology team and the Multiple Sclerosis Center of the Milan Polyclinic, who has been involved in the study, research and treatment of patients suffering from neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders for over 25 years .
Among the stories told in his text, also that of Chris Wright, Derthona Basket player in the 2021/22 season. Telling and making Wright's story known to the citizens of Tortona was possible thanks to the presentation of the book which took place - thanks to the collaboration between the Club and the Tortonese Medical Surgical Society - on Thursday 17 March 2022 in the Conference Room of the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation Tortona.
Derthona Basket embraces Scrivia environment, the interdisciplinary environmental education and communication project created by FAI, FAI Giovani, CAI, CAI-TAM and by Franco Arcesati and Paolo Udina, dedicated to the Tortona area.
To raise awareness of this important local environmental issue, the Club created a video involving players from the men's, women's and youth first teams. The video created inside the Scrivia Park aims to convey the message of the importance of caring for and respecting the environment around us. The sense of responsibility and the promotion of the culture of environmental sustainability are very important for achieving the community objectives outlined by the 2030 Agenda.
The world of basketball was ready to raise awareness on the issue of the war between Russia and Ukraine: Derthona Basket took to the field with the initiative 'Stop War Play Basketball'.
On 6 March 2022, on the occasion of the match against EA7 Emporio Armani Milano, t-shirts bearing the initiative's claim and a basketball colored with the colors of the Ukrainian flag were created and distributed to spectators. The women's team of BCC Derthona Basket also joined the initiative, on that occasion competing in the Final Eight of the Serie A2 Italian Cup in Udine.
Raising awareness on a very current issue such as bullying is an important aspect of Derthona Basket's activity. In 2022, on the occasion of the World Day against Bullying and Cyberbullying and Safer Internet Day (7-8 February), the Club invited us to team up, through the call to action 'STOP Bullying'.
