Peano High School defeats Galileo and wins the 2026 Derthona School Cup.
The first edition of the Derthona School Cup officially concluded today with the Final Four held at the Cittadella dello Sport in Tortona. In a tense and competitive match, Tortona's Liceo Peano emerged victorious, defeating Voghera's IIS Galilei 36-31.
Angelo Zampaloni played a decisive role, being named Final Four MVP with a 12,5-point average: 15 against Santachiara in the semifinals and 10 against the Voghera team in the final. The combined 20 points between Lorenzo Bissalo (11 points) and Gabriele Furfaro (9 points) weren't enough for Galilei.
The day began in the Facility of the Cittadella dello Sport, in an incandescent atmosphere that first led the Liceo G. Peano of Tortona (55-41 against ODPF Santachiara) and then the IISG Galilei of Voghera (40-24 against ITIS A. Volta of Alessandria) to the final played on the parquet of the Nova Arena.
How did the first edition of the Derthona School Cup go?
The competition involved a total of nine schools that competed in three initial stages, respectively at the PalaCamagna in Tortona, the PalaOltrepò in Voghera and the PalaCima in Alessandria.
The first stage, held on February 24, was attended by the G. Peano High School of Tortona, the IISG Marconi High School of Tortona, and the F. Vercelli Scientific High School of Asti, with Peano emerging victorious and securing a place in the Final Four.
In the second round, three schools from Voghera took to the field: ITAC Gallini, ODPF Santachiara, and IISG Galilei, which won the triangular tournament and qualified for April 12th.
The third stage on March 16th saw the participation of IIS Vinci Fermi Nervi of Alessandria, IISC Barletti of Ovada, and ITIS A. Volta of Alessandria, the winner of the day.
The best second-place teams and the best third-place team from the three stages (IIS Vinci Fermi Nervi of Alessandria, ODPF Santachiara, ITAC Gallini, and Liceo Scientifico F. Vercelli) also competed in another four-way tournament on April 10th at the Cittadella dello Sport to determine the fourth semifinalist. ODPF Santachiara secured the final spot in the final.
